Jeugd

Het thema voor deze maand voor de abstract challenge was "childhood". In eerste instantie dacht ik dat dat vertaald werd als "kindertijd". Mijn streven bij de abstract challenge is om een quiltje te maken van het eerste wat na het zien van het thema bij me opkomt. Bij het woord kindertijd kwam echt helemaal niets bij me op.

Na een mailtje naar de groep van Hetty waarin stond dat het woord childhood twee betekenissen heeft, heb ik maar eens een blik in het woordenboek geworpen. Childhood kan inderdaad kindertijd betekenen, maar ook gewoon "jeugd".

En bij deze tweede betekenis kwam wel gelijk iets bij me op, de reden waarom er zoveel reclames zijn en merchandising is die specifiek op kinderen is gericht: het spreekwoord "wie de jeugd heeft, heeft de toekomst".

Dit is het quiltje dat ik er van gemaakt heb, een foetus in de baarmoeder (je kunt immers niet vroeg genoeg beginnen met de jeugd proberen te krijgen) en "the future" (de toekomst) er naast.

This months topic of abstract challenge was childhood. I always try to make a quiltlet using the first thing that comes to mind when seeing a new topic, but with this topic nothing came to mind. I thougth it meant the time when you are a child but after an e-mail to the group by Hetty, in which she wrote that this word has two meanings, I decided to look in the dictionary and found that childhood also means all the children. And when I knew this meaning, a dutch proverb instantly sprang to mind "wie de jeugd heeft, heeft de toekomst" (literally translated as who has the youth, has the future). This is the reason for all the advertising and merchandizing directed almost directly to children. If children want to buy your products, you will be OK for a very long time. I made a little quilt with a fetus on it (one cannot start soon enough with tempting them) and the words "the future" next to it.
