Rood

My third weekly quilt.
Scraps of organza of the enchanted forest, two ironed candywrappers. First quilted horizontally with red and then vertically with blue. Finally I added a piece of wrapping folie that I melted with an iron.
The red looks interesting, but I am having second thougths about the blue foil, which I added because the quilt needed something extra, it's just to obtrusive.

Harde materialen

For "quilten speciaal" we had to do some work on not flexible materials. We were supposed to take the symbol we had also used for our slate scratching but I did not think that would work, because of all those curved lines.
So, I went through my house, looking for an alternative and finally ended up with the shape on the second picture, which is on a sweater I own.
Then I collected some materials: soap, cork, perspex, metal, MDF and wood, selected some tools: nails, a soldering iron and some chisels and had a go at it. It was, in one word, terrible. I am just not made for doing this kind of stuff, I wasted an entire afternoon on this and ended up feeling cranky. The results are that bad, that I will not show you a picture.
The shape however, was still quite nice, just right for the mola on the last picture.

And sometimes I also make a little blue star. Those stars are meant to go into a quilt for the bed in our attic. I want to make 6" and 9" stars and I will need 54 of them, so I can piece some more.

Mola

.
.
This month's artswap with the dutch fibermailgroup was about mola. I am not very active in this group anymore, but I do try to at least participate in the art swap. Mola originates with the Kuna Indians in South America and is a reverse application technique. Pictures of mola can be found here and an explanation of the technique can be found here.
And this technique we had to use to make a fibercard. If you consider those cards being only 10x15 cm and this technique being quite finicky, especially bethis would be not easy. In the end I choose to make my mola by machine. I used three layers of fabric. It was fun making the card, but it don't think I will use this technique anytime soon.

.
And of course I also received a mola card, the red card was made by Marijke.

Common sence

Mijn allereerste abstract challenge quiltje, "winter":

Found this obituary on Laura's blog.

Obituary in the London Times

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn't always fair;
and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived only by his 4 stepbrothers:
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

The quiltlet on top of this post is my first abstract challenge quiltlet, "winter". The green band symbolizes higher temperatures crouching in on our winters, due to the green house effect.

Groen-2

Mijn tweede wekelijkse quiltje.

My second weekly quilt.
The background is the same as that of the quiltlet of last saturday. I put some of those threads that come from your fabrics when you wash them on it, two strips of organza left from the enchanted forest, the spirals are cut out of an ironed candy wrapper (which became denser and easier to cut) and the binding is a leftover piece of commercial binding (sorry, no idea what this is callen in English, we call it "biaisband" I found somewhere).
I am not totally sure about the binding, perhaps a simple satinstitch would have been nicer, but I kind of like the rest of the quiltlet.

Mijn lievelings....

This is the quiltlet I made for the brown bag challenge I blogged about yesterday. I killed two birds with one stone, it is my favorite animal and my favorite artist (Rosina Wachtmeister). If you try finding the artwork which I used for this quiltlet, you can look for a very long time and never find it, it isn't an excisting artwork but I drew it myself. All materials I showed yesterday are used and I used (three kinds of) green as a second color.
On the second picture you can see all that has been finished now. They are made by: Els, Margeeth, Christina, Hetty, Mieke Noor and Tineke.
